KMUD News

Here’s a link to a great story about KMUD’s better than wonderful news director and reporter: Estelle Fennel

Doing a little local (So Hum) surfing around I found a great article on Joellen, so I am gonna post that here.

Local Girl Makes Good News

by Pat Bernstein

That bright, exuberant new voice on the KMUD News belongs to Joellen Clark-Peterson, journalism student and enthusiastic KMUD fan. She came to the station after meeting Diana Hahn at College of the Redwoods and learning that Estelle Fennell needed a reporter for the northern Humboldt area. For Joellen it was a wildly welcome opportunity.

Born and raised in Eureka, Joellen graduated from UC Santa Cruz in 1998 with degrees in Literature and Politics. After two more years of study at College of the Redwoods she did a stint in the Peace Corps. From 1999 and 2001 she was in Romania teaching English in a public school. In that position she became aware of the vast and profound influence of American media on Romanian culture and point of view. It was immediately apparent to her that her treasured experience of listening to KMUD was significant in more ways than she had at first imagined. Community radio, listener supported radio, a voice for a specific community of interests and commonly held values, stood out starkly against the monoculture product, the corporate news and entertainment America exports to the rest of the world.

Since 9/11 the importance of responsible reporting has become even more critical to her and the craft of journalism has taken on a new luster. What better offer could she possible receive than that of working with Estelle Fennell, a skilled, experienced, masterful reporter and an excellent teacher in the bargain?
“It is a huge honor to be her apprentice. I love saying I am her apprentice.” There is a lot to learn about professional journalism, professional ethics, the diplomacy of interviewing, the technical aspects of working with broadcasting equipment and of simply being on the air. There is honing one’s intuition for the story. There is simple talent and hard work. Estelle communicated at the very start the morality that goes with assuming the awesome power of being the one to say “This is the news.”

Now, on Mondays Joellen goes to the news room and checks the press releases that accumulate in the fax box. If there is anything worthwhile there, she makes phone calls to track down more information. She records telephone interviews, writes her copy, puts it all together and at 6 PM takes a deep breath and goes on the air.

In The Political Economy of Growth Paul Baran made a distinction between “intellect workers” who use their minds to earn a living and “intellectuals.” An “intellectual” he said, is someone who knows their place in history. To cover the mundane bread and butter issues of living, Joellen works at Mazzotti’s in Old Town Eureka. Drop in for a fine Italian dinner and your dishes may be bussed by a young woman with a quick, warm smile. She is Joellen Clark-Peterson: intellectual, apprentice newswoman and a very lucky catch for KMUD.

Fire

Garberville and all of Southern Humboldt is covered in smoke from the Canoe fire burning on the north coast/King Range/Honeydew area. This is from CDF’s web site:

“Inaccessibility continues to hamper containment efforts along with hot dry weather on the Canoe fire. Fire intensity increased in the late afternoon and evening yesterday expanding the fire to 1,993 acres. The fire crossed the southern containment line along with numerous spots. Additionally, the fire was very active in the northeast portion of the fire. Containment is a concern as the fire expands toward the indirect line under current weather conditions.”

There is now also fear that the fire may start to encroach on human habitats namely – the northern most part of the Salmon Creek area. Voluntary evacuation is now in effect for the folks way up that hill.

I have only lived in So Hum for 12 years, and since then we have not had a fire of this size this close to us. So far we have been lucky in that no buildings have been lost, or lives for that matter.

My heart goes out to those in so many other areas that haven’t been so lucky, to lose all you have worked so hard for in a heartbeat…whether it is fire or water or wind, it just hurts.

By the way..
Autumn Equinox blessings to us one and all.

and more no news

Where’s Patti?

My favorite read has left!!
Help… I miss you already.
Please come back or tell me where you went!

In my life there is still no news 🙁

We are being smoked to death by the Canoe Fires on the north coast of California.

I am not sleeping well.
But my hip pain is almost gone… good thing.

Sorry for such crummy posts, but they are hurried because I need to stay OFF-LINE waiting for the doctor who doesn’t call with any news.
[remember these are the dial-up days]

Farmers Market

I took some pictures at Garberville’s Farmer’s Market… not ready to upload them just yet. Many are of some most wonderful cacti and succulents, from Catching Cactus & Succulents, that i have ever seen. They have a wonderful sense of display and style.
I will post pics sometime soon.

The reason i can’t post right now, is that i just found out we need to go to San Fransisco on Monday.. and may be gone several days. This is not fun trip and i have a ton of things to do before then. So the blog and the rest of my life will be on hold for awhile.

Some white light about now would be great.

Whittemore Grove

Whittemore Grove borders the Eel River, and we drive through it daily to go to our land. It is an integral part of our landscape here in Southern Humboldt.

A big thanks to Stable Slopes Forever, for working to keep these trees protected.

Redwoods in Whittemore Grove on Briceland Road

So often in our busy lives and hurry to and fro we forget or neglect to take the time to stop and experience the redwoods. The other day when I was photographing the Road Spam, we took some time there.

Redwoods in Whittemore Grove on Briceland Road

I need to do this more often. Living in the wilderness sometimes means that I take it for granted. People come here from all over the world to see the trees and experience the North Coast. Our ‘commutes’ are what other people do on vacation! We live in beauty. I need to see it, instead of the chores that need to be done.

Road Spam

Recently while driving out to our land I spotted about a 25′ long piece of road spam. This is just the top portion of it:

Road spam on Briceland Road

The writing was in reference to a missing person here in Southern Humboldt county who is a very active pot activist, and Prop 215 (medical marijuana) advocate.

Chris Giauque Missing

He has been missing over 3 weeks now, and is presumed dead. For more info: North Coast Journal

If there is any possible chance you know anything about this case, please contact his brother Clint (707-822-4415) … if only to help alleviate the suffering of the family. (There is a $50,000 reward for information on what happened to Chris and who might be responsible.)

I did not know him, but still I am sadden and puzzled, and want to know where he is.

Last week one of our youth was also killed. This is a small community and things like this don’t happen often. The memorial is today. The killers are at large. Again I am saddened and angry.

Marijuana must be de-criminalized.

Lots of Little Things

Today is Russel and my anniversary, have i mentioned him yet? We have been married 8 years and living together for 12.
I got really lucky when I found him, or we found each other, however you like to look at those things. I met him when i was 42, i had never been married or had any kids, and didn’t really think that would ever be part of my life.
He is kind, considerate, funny, compassionate, generous, truthful, honest, loving, caring and committed…..and a 3rd degree (Sandan) in Aikido. More on that later.
We are happy, content, and going the long distance.

Soon we will leave for brunch at the Woodrose Cafe, the best breakfast place ever.

In other news:

I am still trying to learn how to use Canon G3 with no flash in a small club venue. I hope i get at least a couple of decent shots. I also hope having the camera doesn’t distract me too much from enjoying Bruce Cockburn (in 2 days at the Mystic!).

So i am gearing up for Bruce Cockburn, and Russel is gearing up for Reggae on the River in a whole different way, because the Aikido school does a food booth there selling burritos. (This was before the reggae wars and the split- again too bad all the old archives are gone!)
I will make a long post soon about Reggae, several actually as it is one huge event, 3 days of music and a mini-city built onsite. It is exhausting to work and play there.
