WP and FB

(Ages since last post.)

I have been working on a new install of WordPress as a CMS.
I remember when I installed MT here for this blog, took some time, but was relatively easy.

The MT forums at the time (2003) were active with friendly people who wanted to help..not just point you to an outdated Codex file.
Word Press, for all its popularity, doesn’t do some very simple things well at all. I started the dev 2 months ago, at version 2.8 since then there have been 4 major upgrades of the software!

Because I hand code, I know how to do everything I am asking WP to do for me, but trying to get WP to do it, well is another thing.
The reason I chose WP, was the client wanted to be able to ‘write their own info’ (post) and upload photos and such, so i needed to give them a back end that was user friendly.

I don’t know how that will work out in the long run, but it’s been a summer of WP learning curve and frustration. And it doesn’t look like this site will ‘go live’ for at least another month!
[the site did go live HumCPR]
[I have continued working with WP and learning constantly..)

(life)
We did get away for our anniversary July 27, just a short trip to Ruth Lake, some swimming and a bit of fishing.
We also did Reggae on the River, the one day event now at Benbow State Park, very irie and fun.

Russel is really making some progress on some of the homesteading projects we have, so that is good. School starts soon and time will be short.

I talk with Dad’s widow, Sue a lot. I miss the Michigan family, after being there for so long, I got used to being able to see everyone.
Not to good about keeping in touch, but making an effort.

Facebook as become my hang out, lots of my cousins and nieces are on there so I can keep in touch that way. And many locals who I don’t see all that often, so now we can at least play a game of Lexulous (scrabble) every now and then. I have also ‘friended’ with lots of Bruce Cockburn Humans, some old friends, and even made some new ones.

I guess the neatest Facebook story I have so far is this one:

Background:

I went to high school and was friends with a group of brothers (4), D,G,J,R. Both D and R have passed. I have pictures of us from 1966 to 1971.

Well my cousin on FB, had a friend with the same last name as the 4 above, he ‘friended’ me and said, “hey won’t J & G be surprised by who I found on FB!”

So I connected with him, I vaguely remember him, as he is the youngest brother of the 4 I mentioned. Come to find out that J (who I was friends all through school) has some kids with girl I went to school with. (who also has passed on)

So they fb’d me..and they wanted the stories, because they had never met their uncles.. dying so young and all. And they didn’t have pictures.

So I spent a weekend digging though old photo albums and year books, scanned a bunch of photos into FB and told them some stories about their uncles, even the youngest brother didn’t know a lot of this stuff and had never seen most of these pictures.

The gratitude and thankfulness I felt from them for doing this little thing lifted me up, when I was very down and still grieving heavily for my Dad.

So when you wonder if you should pitch all those old photos, well, maybe not. Maybe find the persons who will treasure them and pass them on.

Anyway to me it was the neatest FB connection so far.

Flickr

Playing with new Flickr account

mushrooms

Playing with a new Flickr account. Took about 50 photos of mushrooms near our home. More are coming when I get this account set up the way I want it.

One thing will be to set up the Flickr template for ‘blog this’ to fit this here blog style/code a bit better.

What I intend to do, is post a lot of photos at Flickr, just post one here, and save bandwidth here.

Time will tell how it all works, but so far is smooth and seems like it could be a lot of fun!

This is a test.

[this didn’t transfer over very well and i haven’t used flickr in ages, will have to re do for WP]

Firefox!

Finally loaded Firefox to check a site I am working up for Russel’s Aikido school,(yes the same school and site that I have done 4 versions of now!)

And it rocks!! I do believe it will replace IE6 for me and hopefully I can convert Russel when he is on this machine too.

I haven’t decided yet whether to use Eudora or Thunderbird for email, but xp’s outlook express has gotta go. My in box is full of spam daily.

It’s been fun and a bit of a mind bender to be coding again, new stuff, if i don’t keep my head in it I will forget everything i knew, and it all changes and grows so fast that everything I knew will be worthless soon!!

So working on the homestead is still the priority, and there’s always so much to do when you are living in an unfinished house (1000 sq ft) with little infrastructure to build upon..but it is coming along and by the summer will be a much different space. I promise pictures when there is something to photo about!

Comment Spam

OK – I’m back with a few other tidbits.
My little blog here got slammed with spam comments the other week.
For awhile I removed all abilitiy to comment, but not liking that, I finally downloaded and set up Jay Allens MT-Blacklist, which I had never done as it didn’t seem necessary. Now I just need to remember to go and get the latest spam ids, and hopefully that won’t happen again.

Up to my Eye balls in Gallery!

I finally installed Gallery.
Of course right from the start there were issues, I was using my Fantastico to install on my CPanel which my hosts had set up, it was throwing errors and rather than ask my wonderful Hosting Matters hosts, I asked at the Gallery forums, and of course they said to download latest version and upload.

Well the upload took over 2 hours! And I didn’t include all the skins.
I should of asked HM, they would of saved me time, any way, it’s up and running and I have sooo many questions that just don’t seem to be asked or answered at the forums.

I will post them tomorrow and see where to go from here. I know I will customize it’s looks, but I really don’t think that will be a problem. It’s more questions like,
“Can I run the reconfiguration wizard as many times as I need?”

“Can I use one install of Gallery in my root space for add-on-domains which are in the same web space?”

and on and on…
Like I said..up to my eyeballs…

Also need an outline of a good work flow for the photos, do all the sizing myself? Let Gallery do it? Fastest way to upload, remember 56k running at 44k here.

[I never got very far with that Gallery install.. just started it and moved on. It is here. I plan on a whole new Gallery – WP – photos development, once this site is live again ~bobbi / 22march2010.]

MT 3 – Movable Type

Well in my too busy to keep up world, I put off upgrading my MT 2.64 installation to the MT 2.66 version. Now it seems, I am really too late, as it will cost me at least $65 according to the new MT3 licenses.

There has been quite a backlash at MT around these licenses:
MetaFilter and Dive in to Mark.
MT has updated some of the licenses and added a FAQ that helps clarify things.

I never did with this blog what my original intent was. I always planned on adding a second or third blog to my installation, and without upgrading, I can still do that. No errors with MT2.64 will be addressed, and as I see it no way to get to 2.66 without paying, and that won’t be updated either.

So at least for awhile this site will remain MT.
There is a possibility that I will go with WordPress at some point.
[Well that took, lets see — 6 years!] Only time will tell.

I had hoped to turn my main domain, into a blog operated site, and had planned on using MT, but now I probably won’t do that, or at least not use MT.

Still need to put together a photo gallery, which I also had planned to use MT for with the Gallery script. Now I don’t know just how I will do that.

Changes are ahead, what ever way I go. And lack of time to implement them is a constant.

Leo Laporte’s Gone

Leo’s Gone 🙁

I’ve been so busy, I was missing many of the Call for Help and Screensavers shows. When I tuned in finally last week, I noticed a lot of repeats, and NO Leo. Sad. LeoVille.com.
I wish the best for Leo.

I will still watch, while they are on, Call For Help and SS, I really do like Patrick Norton and Kevin Rose and the whole gang at both shows.

Tech-Tv being bought by Comcast just adds to the stress, that all we know and love about TT may be lost.

My cable system just picked up Tech-Tv last year. I learn a lot from the shows and will really miss Leo. Call For Help will never be the same level of fun.

I like Patrick with Leo, I do like Kevin, but have to say that half the time I barely understand what he is talking about 🙂

Note: (2010)
Call For Help
Leo Laporte
The Screen Savers
and you can Google any of these guys and shows and find them still doing great techy stuff on the web.

Validation or not

Finally got this page to validate.
Still having a weird image not show problem when trying to use those tiny buttons (Steal These Buttons) seen everywhere, don’t know what’s up with that just yet.
And so far the css isn’t validated, (it was at one time, but changes have been made), it tells me to validate xhtml first! (ah..it is!)
Ok too hot to do any more,
I did update the side bar some and fixed some other little things.
More later.
